International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association (IHMSA)

The name of the discipline is pretty self explanatory: it involves using a pistol to knock over metal targets shaped like animals and birds at varying ranges according to the competition and the firearms being used. Each of the differing targets, chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams, are set at different ranges depending on the event being contested, with the nearest targets being the smallest (the chickens) and the largest (rams) being set at the furthest distance from the firing line. 22 LR and centerfire cartridges compete on the 100 meter firing line. The 200 meter firing line will handle any centerfire handgun up to a muzzle velocity of 2400 fps. Even our T-1 (expensive) targets will be damaged above that velocity.

Monthly Matches are forty shots long, and there are ten targets set at each of the four ranges. A shooter starts out by shooting ten chickens at the closest range, then ten pigs a bit further out, then ten turkeys a little bit further away, and finally ten rams at the maximum distance for the match. Matches are the second weekend of the month: Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sunday from 8:00 A.M. till 4:00P.M.

The rules are a little confusing for the newcomer, but if you are interested in the details a copy of the rules can be found on the IHMSA home page. It does not matter what type of handgun you have, there is a category for you to shoot in. Come on out,bust some steel and tell some lies with us. You don't need any fancy accessories or duds. Our only requirement is eye and hearing protection be worn! So come on out and we will help you get started enjoying a fun, family sport.

We had 6 SCGAA Members and were joined by 4 guests for our January Silhouette Match. February will be Saturday the 9th from 8:30-3:00 and Sunday the 10th from 8:30-1:00. Bring your handgun, Cowboy Rifle or 22 Rifle and shoot with us. You don't have to shoot for score and it's FREE to SCGAA Members!
