Civilian Marksmanship Program (or CMP)

The Corporations for the promotion of Rifle Practices [CPRPRS] was established in 1996 to conduct the Civilian Marksmanship Program or CMP.

The CMP promotes firearms safety training and rifle practices for all qualified U.S. Citizens with special emphasis on youth. The CMP operates through through a network of affiliated shooting clubs and associations that covers every state in the U.S. The clubs and associates offer firearm safety training and marksmanship courses as well as opportunity for continued Practice and competition.

Federal legislation approved by the U.S. Congress and president created the CMP. The original purpose of the CMP was to provide civilians with opportunities to learn and practice marksmanship skills so they would be skilled marksmen if later called upon to serve in the U.S. armed services.

Over the years the emphasis of the program shifted to focus on youth development through marksmanship. From 1916 to 1996 the Department of the Army administered the CMP. In 1996 the U.S. Congress created the new CPRPFS that took over administration and promotion of the CMP. The CPRPFS is a tax-exempt not for profit 501 [c] [3] charity that derives it's mission from public law.

The National Matches, Excellence-in-Competition Matches and other competition programs have been important components of the CMP legacy since the early 1900's. The CMP promotes these competitions as important ways to test and celebrate marksmanship skills at their finest. They are also a vital means of fostering the development of shooting sports leaders who can instruct more youth in target shooting and promote the growth of marksmanship activities among citizens of the United States.

At SCGAA we promote these programs through High-powered Rifle Competitions and Small Bore Rifle Competitions. All shooters, beginners to experienced competitors, are encouraged to attend the matches. The club's monthly newsletter contains the dates and times for the matches.
